Wringer
Washers
The wringer washer was commonly found in households before
electricity started to become more common in the 1930s and has since been almost entirely replaced by washing
machines, even though there are some new model wringer washers that are still in production today.
The concept of this product
was to help reduce the amount of energy that was needed to first soak and then remove the water from the wet
material. The first wringers were hand operated by cranking a mechanism to extract the water from the clothes
without requiring whoever was washing to twist the material by hand to extract the water.
Today, water is commonly extracted from clothing that is being
washed by spinning the clothes in the drum of the washing machine, which is known as the spin cycle. This type of
water extraction method was only available for industrial use for many years after the electric motor was invented
before it started to make its way into the home.
Even with the advances in washing, wringer washers are still
available today. Some individuals purchase these products for nostalgic reasons, as well as the fact that some of
the older model washers are quite valuable thanks to their antique and collector status. Additionally, wringer
washers are still being used in some rural homes as well as in countries that do not have constant access to
electricity.
Depending on the type of washer you are looking for, whether for
collecting purposes or actual use, there are several different ways to find the type of product you are looking
for. For collectors, searching online is the best way to find individuals looking to sell their own machines, often
through Internet auction sites such as eBay, or companies that specialize in refurbishing old machines to work
properly and look like new again.
Some of the older wringer washer machines are being sold
for close to a thousand dollars while machines that either do not work, have imperfections like dings and
scratches, or are not considering collector quality can be found for $100 to $500.
Individuals looking to purchase a washer for actual use will
probably also need to use the Internet to find a manufacturer of a new machine thanks to the fact that they are
quite outdated. There are no longer any American manufacturers that still produce these kinds of washtubs (Maytag
stopped production in 1983), but companies in other countries still do continue to produce these products to
sell.
